B2 First (FCE) Use of English Section Guide
The Use of English tasks form the first four parts of the combined Reading and Use of English paper, lasting 1 hour and 15 minutes in total. This section measures control over English grammar structures, vocabulary precision, and word formation, making up a significant portion of your overall B2 First score.
The Use of English section features 4 specific task types:
- Part 1 (Multiple-Choice Cloze): A short text with 8 gaps testing vocabulary, collocations, phrasal verbs, and fixed phrases across four options.
- Part 2 (Open Cloze): A text with 8 gaps where you must supply the missing word without options, focusing mainly on grammar structures like prepositions and relative pronouns.
- Part 3 (Word Formation): A text with 8 gaps requiring you to transform a given root word using prefixes and suffixes to fit the context.
- Part 4 (Key Word Transformations): 6 separate sentences where you rewrite a sentence using a given key word so it retains the exact same meaning, using between two and five words.
Most candidates find Part 4 to be the most frustrating part of the entire paper. The trick is realizing that Cambridge examiners love testing specific patterns like passive structures, inverted conditionals, and indirect reporting. If you try to translate directly from your native language or rely purely on what sounds right, you will drop points quickly.
For Part 3, double-check whether the gap requires a negative prefix or a plural noun. It is surprisingly common to transform the root word correctly but still lose the mark because you missed a subtle negative context in the surrounding sentence. Spending three extra seconds reading the whole paragraph usually prevents these careless mistakes.
Watch your time closely during these four parts. Aim to finish Parts 1 through 4 in roughly 30 to 35 minutes so you leave enough time to deal with the longer reading texts in Parts 5, 6, and 7 without rushing.
