Exercise 6 - Part 2
For questions 1-8, think of the best word that fits each gap. Use only one word in each gap. All answers must be in lowercase.
Some of the gaps might have more than 1 answer, in that case, the system will detect it as incorrect, but will provide all the possible answers.
For centuries, early cartographers faced a great deal (1) difficulty when drawing accurate world maps, largely because of the limited navigation tools available. Did these sailors chart new lands at around the same time (2) of luck, or did they possess secret knowledge? Although there is a lack of clear evidence, historians have come up with various theories about the manner (3) which these maps were created. One recent theory is that ancient civilizations had evolved in (4) a way that they could navigate using the stars with extreme precision. In other (5) , their astronomical knowledge came about as a result of centuries of observation. Language and culture might well have been shared across oceans, but (6) written records, this remains hard to prove. This research shows, if nothing (7) , that ancient mariners were far more capable than we think, and their achievements were by no (8) accidental.
